Camden Roundhouse
The Camden Roundhouse is an impressive live performance space in London; transformed from a Grade II listed former railway engine repair shed. The venue hosts an exciting programme of events throughout the year, from live music to theatre and circus.
The team at The Roundhouse approached Day Aggregates when they decided to convert an unused space into something special for the summer. The project was to utilise the temporary car park and recreate a tropical beach area for a 6-week period to attract tourists into London for the Olympics.
The aim was to create the ultimate beach party environment for visitors to enjoy so no pressure! To start we imported 5 to 6 artic loads of Leisure Sand from Sibelco at Godstone which was tipped into the car parking area and then a further 55 bulk bags of the same material. The team then spread the sand and created their desired look.
Leisure Sand is a fine grade material which has been washed and has a very attractive colour and feel – the perfect material for creating a tropical beach environment. It also works well for building sandcastles and for sculpting for those more creative visitors!
The beach area was adorned with deck chairs and parasols as well as an impressive live cinema set up. As an added extra for the event, we took the opportunity to design and provide Day Aggregates beach balls for the occasion. These were given out free of charge to the public throughout the affair, with lots of fun had by all!
The tropical beach remained in place for the entirety of the six weeks and was a great success. At the end of the event, we deconstructed the area and removed the sand. Nothing was wasted – with the sand returned to our depot in Woking where it was re-sold as reject sand.
